I really wasn't sure if I'd be ok as a complete novice in this class, but I was and had the BEST time! Two hours flew by. The instructor was a pleasure to work with and I love my little not-so-perfect tote bag. A reminder of which skills I need to work on.

Great class: well paced, not overwhelming, experienced instructor. The only thing missing was sone kind of handout with a reminder of Etsy we learned. I took pics, and hopefully that’s enough.

The instructor was knowledgeable and patient. She identified the parts of the sewing machine, demonstrated each step of the sewing task, and helped students individually, if needed. The sewing room was clean and materials were prepared in advance of the class. After completing the tote bag, the instructor answered questions and allowed participants to continue practicing, using fabric scraps.

The class was small so there was more individualized instruction. Our teacher was sweet and patient and took her time explaining all the steps to the students! Great class! Just booked another class with them! :)

Will they teach how to set the timing on the machine? I own a 1951 "White sewing machine " I restored it to working condition but the timing is off and I don't know anything about sewing but am willing to learn.

Question from Daisy P.
Are we able to bring our own fabric? Saw the photo from below, but is that the only fabric we can choose from?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Daisy! For this class, the school provides materials for the project. All tote bags are made from denim. The student is welcome to provide their own fabric, but it needs to be cut and prepared before they arrive, and they recommend staying away from anything shiny, slippery, sheer, sequined, etc. The dimensions of the cut piece of fabric are 14"x36".

Question from Anusheh H.
Hi. I have an 8-year-old who has little experience with a sewing machine already. Would it be alright if she joined for the course?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! Generally, this class is geared toward adults, but they do teach children as well. They would recommend a private lesson instead. Private lessons are $60/hour, and they can teach the same skills and project as the Sewing Machine Basics Workshop, or they can gear the lesson to something more specific if she has another project in mind. You can check the private class here: https://coursehorse.com/nyc/classes/art/textile/sewing/sewing-machine/sewing-machine-basics-private-

What kind of sewing machine will be used for class? Can I bring my own sewing machine and learn the basics?
Answer from Kristle C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! Sewing Center provides the Janome Sewist 500 sewing machines. If you would like to bring your own machine, a private lesson might be a better option. Hope that helps!
