Why You Should Learn Tap Online

Studies have shown that engaging in any style of dance improves mood by making people feel happier and less stressed, but tap dance may provide an extra boost. Have you encountered musical stairs or sidewalks where each step played a piano note? It’s fun to make music with your feet. Tapping and sliding to create musical sound can be highly satisfying and percussive sound can provide great emotional release.

Tap dance offers physical benefits as well. It may surprise you to learn that tap dancing is considered a full-body workout! While the sound of tap comes from the feet, the dance involves movements of the arms and legs that work nearly all muscles from neck to foot. Tap is usually performed at a quick pace and is excellent for burning calories and working the heart. Tap is also known to improve balance, posture, and coordination. A sitting form of tap dance has been used to improve cognition in Alzheimer’s and dementia patients.

While tap dance can certainly be performed solo, it originated from social dances and group performances remain popular today. Taking up tap classes will put you in a new social group where you can form friendships and other relationships. Individuals who find an accepting and welcoming community experience increased feelings of belonging and decreased feelings of loneliness.

If you have serious interest in becoming a dancer or are already in dance classes but want to improve your skills, tap dance has a reputation for being a foundational dance style. Through tap, dance students learn to listen, count time signatures, and find rhythm. Tap dancers tend to have a better understanding of how to accent their movements and bring expression to their performance in ways that other dancers may be missing. If you’re seeking to become a well-rounded dancer or understand dance on a deeper level, tap is for you!

It’s possible to make side income through dancing, though not everyone will become proficient enough in the skill to do so. Tap dancers might perform on stage or television commercials. Some people make money performing on social media, which also doubles as a portfolio when applying for dancing gigs. Some students go on to become teachers themselves. If you’d like to make money through dancing, it will take a lot of dedication and practice outside of the

Online vs. In-Person Tap Classes

In-person tap classes provide a more traditional way to learn tap. There are many benefits to taking dance classes at a studio, including real-time interactions with fellow classmates and instructors, help with form and movements, and a space ready to use when you walk in the door. However, physical studios don’t provide the only avenue to learn tap! Virtual classes are great options for those with busy lifestyles, such as caretakers, or those with unconventional work schedules, such as delivery drivers or servers. Online tap classes are also more accessible, taking any commute time or extra stress out of the equation. Instead, virtual learners can log on at home without any extra prep and be ready for class. However, don’t forget you’ll need to find shoes and a surface when taking classes outside a studio.

Can I Learn Tap for Free Online?

Yes! You can learn tap for free online. However, it’s important to know that learning tap for free means you’re on your own. You won’t have the benefits an instructor and organized class provide. Unless you are used to providing your own structure to take on new projects or learn new hobbies, you might let tap fall to the wayside. The benefits you’ll receive in exchange for paying for a class will be well worth it!
