This intensive 3-day workshop provides professional-level training in Steadicam™ Stabilizer Systems instruction led by qualified instructors certified through the Steadicam Operators Association (SOA). The comprehensive curriculum focuses on proper equipment setup and balance, advanced operating techniques, and on-set protocols essential for those pursuing a career as a professional Steadicam operator in film and television production.
The SOA has developed an advanced training methodology that integrates neurobiology (the brain and nervous system) with kinesiology (human movement mechanics and anatomy), specifically applied to professional Steadicam operation. This workshop provides participants with extensive practical experience combined with theoretical knowledge, enabling operators to achieve proficiency quickly while developing the mental strategies necessary to manage future technical challenges. The program includes specialized exercises and challenging shots you can practice independently after course completion. Each group of four participants has access to at least one complete Steadicam system and an experienced instructor-operator. Workshops accommodate groups of eight to twelve participants with mixed skill levels, from beginners to advanced operators.
Upon successful completion, students qualify for SOA advanced 2-day specialized training programs offering concentrations in Cinema and Broadcast techniques. Graduates also receive access to SOA Online continuing education courses during their first year of SOA membership, supporting ongoing professional development and skill enhancement.
No equipment ownership is required. All Steadicam systems, vests, and accessories are supplied for training purposes. If you own your personal vest, you are encouraged to bring it for familiarization and proper fitting, which significantly improves your comfort and system integration. Some vests may require socket block modifications that we can accommodate. Please notify us in advance if you plan to bring your own equipment, including the vest brand, so we can prepare appropriate adjustments and allocate necessary inventory.
Topics Covered in This Training:
- The physical science of Steadicam operation, including physiology, kinesiology, mind-body care, and ongoing equipment maintenance
- Physical principles governing the vest, arm, and sled components
- Assembling and disassembling the complete Steadicam system
- Steadicam balance techniques addressing both static and dynamic balance physics
- Inertial control and augmentation strategies
- Safety protocols and emergency procedures
- Practice techniques and shot variations for skill building
- Scene blocking, rehearsal strategies, and navigation approaches
- Aids to navigation and visual reference systems
- Video transmission and signal reception optimization
- Video assist systems and monitoring
- New equipment technologies and prototype systems
- Set politics, professional conduct, and management dynamics
- Business practices and professional standards in the industry
The course concludes with a complex final test shot that each operator performs while being filmed. Both the operator and the recorded shot are reviewed and analyzed to provide comprehensive feedback on technical execution and operator performance.
Workshop participants should be in good overall health without physical limitations that would prevent safe equipment operation. Participants must be capable of safely lifting 50 pounds or more without physical issues. If you have any health concerns, consult your physician before participation.
Using a Steadicam correctly does not cause back pain; proper technique strengthens your back while improving posture and overall body alignment. Successful operators range from under 110 pounds to nearly 330 pounds, demonstrating that body type does not limit your ability to operate the equipment professionally.
Wear athletic footwear each day that provides excellent ankle support and allows tactile ground feedback. Dress in layers, as training occurs both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. Participants with dietary restrictions or special accommodations should notify us in advance so we can provide appropriate support throughout the workshop.
Who Should Attend:
This professional-level workshop is designed for individuals seriously considering or actively pursuing a career as a professional Steadicam operator in film, television, or commercial production.
