From signage to quilt squares to comic book characters, neon art starts with the same step as making a commercial neon sign: making a detailed neon pattern. Well-planned patterns are necessary for neon benders to replicate the 2D image in 3D glass. This introductory neon bending class will go through all the basics of neon tube bending and assembly, with a focus on hand making simplified illustrative patterns from a student’s chosen inspiration. Students will learn how to read and utilize neon patterns to best plan their approach to shape, without bending themselves into a tangled mess. Outside of fabrication there will be lectures and discussion around the conceptual weight of neon as a material. Primarily focusing on Its connection to signage and advertisements and how those topics can inform your designs.
What to Expect: This course is designed for beginner students who are brand new to neon, as well as for students who have taken one or two workshops and are looking to level up their techniques and understanding of the process. Students can expect to walk away with a small neon project and the knowledge and supplies to easily install it indoors. Students are encouraged to come to class ready with an image or concept for a neon project, however there will be premade neon designs on hand for students to use or reference as well. Simple line drawings, bits of text with 2-4 characters (more characters may be difficult to see though in our short time together), or squiggly gestural shapes are all good starting points. Size will very, but the general size can be anywhere from 6"-24" in width and/or height. About 1/3 of class time will be demos and discussions, and about 2/3 will be work time. During this work time, students can request demos, either repeating beginner techniques or showing them more intermediate/advanced techniques as requested. While there will be a demonstration on the bombarding and filling process, students will not be permitted to operate the bombarding/ gas filling manifold. Particularly for first-time neon students, instructors and TA's may aid directly in finishing pieces, especially welding on electrodes to our neon units.
Eligibility: No neon (or drawing) experience is required but recommended. Complexity of the bending pattern and design will scale with student experience. Open to ages 14 and up.
Pick-up: Students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work.
