Class Description

Description

Begin with the fundamentals of properly alloying and preparing 22k gold, then advance into the full range of techniques for creating stunning high-karat gold jewelry.

22k gold is an extraordinary material to work with, and after this intensive week, you will understand exactly why. You will learn to alloy and prepare your gold for superior fusing, soldering, and granulation results, then move into all the essential skills and tricks of high-karat goldsmithing. You will leave with significantly elevated technical skills and a collection of handmade 22k jewelry to show for it.

Taught by Jeanette K Caines.

Tools and Materials:

  • We recommend purchasing gold from Lee at Marco Polo
  • You will need one-half or one ounce of .9999 fine gold (more if you like)
  • Bring your standard metalworking tools; anything else you need, such as a new alloying block, silver, or copper, can be purchased here
  • Basic metalworking tools include scissors, chain-nose and round-nose pliers, files, sandpaper, tweezers, dividers, soldering blocks, a ruler, a Sharpie marker, dowels, and approximately 2 dwt. fine silver for alloying

The studio provides the following shared tools, so leave these at home:

  • Saw blades and frames, hammers, tripods, and large mandrels
