Class Description

Description

Join us for this stellar workshop led by Brooklyn-based designer Joey Casey. In just three hours you'll learn the beginner basics of sewing with leather, and you'll leave with an adorable little bag. Take your pick of several vibrant colors of supple leather, as well as colorful zippers, and a variety of patterned lining fabrics. You'll make a bag that's 100% you--with your choice of color combinations throughout.

In this workshop you'll learn:
  • The beginner basics of sewing leather, with a focus on how it differs from fabric.
  • How to select the right type of leather for home sewing.
  • How to cut leather and sew basic seams on a machine.
  • How to install a zipper. How to add a lining to your bag.
  • How to attach a wrist strap.
Skill requirements: This is not a learn-to-sew class; you must have basic sewing skills and be comfortable using a sewing machine. Our Sewing 101 (or equivalent) is a prerequisite to this workshop.

Class price includes all materials (selection of colorful high-quality leather, zippers and lining fabric) and use of our BERNINA sewing machines.

  • In the event a class is cancelled or rescheduled due to inclement weather, or other Act of God, you will receive a credit to take another class at a later date (in-person or virtual).

Refund Processing Fees:

  • The following only applies in the event a provider’s cancellation/refund policy allows for cancellations and a full refund, please see above or contact CourseHorse to determine eligibility.
  • In the event a class is still going to occur and a full refund is requested, and you are eligible for a full refund in accordance with the provider’s policy, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from your refund amount.

  • Sew a Leather Zipper Pouch

Based on the picture advertised for this class, it would appear that we would have been making more of a foldover clutch. That was a mis-representation. When I asked them while there, before starting, Brooklyn Craft Co said that "that's likely an old picture from a different class and they just haven't changed it yet - sorry about that." Not awesome. The options for colors of leather were incredibly limited and mostly not at all appealing or desirable. They seemed like leftovers. Additionally, there were only 4 or so liners to choose from, and if we didn't like those, which most of us didn't, we had to buy one from their big selection of much more attractive liners. While I understand I also paid for the experience, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't also very much looking forward to the end product, and it being something I'd want to use or wear. This class would have to be $25-$30, in order for it to be a good value. I definitely don't feel comfortable spending what I spent, considering. The teacher however was funny and very knowledgeable, and I enjoyed the experience. I wouldn't have minded a glass of wine though, or maybe a bottle of water. Lastly, the class ran almost 30 minutes over.

This was more fun than I've had in forever -- beautiful colored leathers to mix and match… a delightful and inspired teacher, Joey, the motherly Brett and fabulous women from all over the area. We all walked away with soft and truly beautiful leather bags that looked like they were sewn by professionals. Of course we were spoiled by working on the fabulous Bernina machine which I now can only find for $1200 plus :( I am sure we would have had a much different experience if we were all working on my machine from home, fondly known as "The Bastard". CourseHorse, I will be back for more. Thanks for a wonderful Sunday in Brooklyn! Nan Dillon
