Class Description

Description

Learn modern and contemporary quilting techniques in this comprehensive and well-paced one-day workshop that will cover all the essential and fundamental basics of assembling, machine quilting, and finishing a beautiful and functional small quilt.

In one five-hour intensive session, you will learn the following important quilting skills and techniques:

  • Understanding quilting materials in depth and detail, including different batting types, weights, and binding techniques for various projects
  • How to properly assemble a traditional "quilt sandwich" and baste or prepare it correctly for quilting on your machine
  • How to quilt successfully on a standard home sewing machine using a walking foot attachment for even feeding
  • How to attach quilt binding by machine to finish the raw edges professionally and securely

During the class, you will start and finish a 36-inch square quilt with two different coordinating fabrics on the front and back sides. The finished project makes an ideal baby quilt, lap quilt, throw, or decorative wall hanging. You will also leave with the knowledge, confidence, and resources to tackle more advanced quilting projects on your own at home and continue your quilting journey.

Important Note About Class Content: This class does not cover patchwork quilting techniques or pieced quilting. You will be working with solid pieces of coordinating fabric rather than pieced patchwork designs. If you are interested in learning traditional patchwork quilting and piecing, please check out our Beginner Patchwork Intensive course, which focuses on that technique specifically.

Skill Requirements and Prerequisites:

  • This is an easy-to-intermediate level class; you do not need advanced sewing skills, but you must have basic machine sewing knowledge and prior sewing experience
  • Completion of our Sewing 101 class or equivalent quilting course is a prerequisite for enrollment. We cannot accept students for this class who have never operated or used a sewing machine before.

Materials List and Supply Requirements:

  • Fabric, batting, and binding notions needed for class are available for purchase at our shop at a discounted 10% student discount rate
  • For Beginner Quilting, you will need the following materials and supplies to bring or purchase:
    • 1 yard of high-quality quilting cotton for the quilt back
    • 1 yard of quilting cotton for the front or quilt top, or if you have previously taken Beginner Patchwork, you can use your Log Cabin quilt top creation
    • 1 pack of crib-sized cotton batting material
    • 2 packs of quilt binding in your chosen colors
    • 1 spool of coordinating thread, or 2 spools if you want to match the binding perfectly as well

Refund Policy

We do not issue refunds on workshop registrations.

  • If you register for a workshop and later become unable to attend, we will gladly offer a credit if you notify us at least 5 business days before the workshop.
  • Workshop credits are not redeemable for cash and cannot be applied to merchandise purchases
  • We are unable to offer credits of any kind, or honor reschedule requests, with less than 5 business days advance notice.
  • Credits cannot be given for any registrations for workshops hosted by visiting/ out of town instructors. Due to the nature of these one-time-only workshops, all events hosted by special guests are subject to this policy. Thank you for understanding!
  • In the event a class is cancelled or rescheduled due to inclement weather, or other Act of God, you will receive a credit to take another class at a later date (in-person or virtual).

Our workshops require a great deal of pre-planning, including ordering supplies and tools, booking staff, and making commitments to pay our instructors -- all based on the number of students who register. When students ask to cancel or reschedule at the last minute, we lose money. As a small business, we are unable to absorb these costs and still keep our class prices low.

In fairness to all of our customers, we are unable to make exceptions to our policy, including for reasons of illness or travel. If you are unable to attend a workshop at the last minute, we suggest giving your spot to a friend!

Refund Processing Fees:

  • The following only applies in the event a provider’s cancellation/refund policy allows for cancellations and a full refund, please see above or contact CourseHorse to determine eligibility.
  • In the event a class is still going to occur and a full refund is requested, and you are eligible for a full refund in accordance with the provider’s policy, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from your refund amount.

I loved this class so much! I was very nervous - I had been trying to teach myself to sew...with mixed results. The instructor was super clear and I walked away with a beautiful quilt! I can't believe it.

Great class! Very manageable quilting project for beginners. There were only four of us in the class and I think that is the perfect size since Giuseppe was able to give everyone individual attention w/o others having to wait around. Even so, the class went a bit over, and everyone left with just having to stitch the undersides of their bindings, but a very simple final step to complete at home. It was Giuseppe's first time teaching the class and he did a great job. Thanks, Giuseppe! The shop itself is meticulously curated: small but nice selection of (mostly) Kona cottons and Cotton and Steel fabrics for the project. The fabric, batting, binding and thread cost everyone around $40. Thanks, Brooklyn Craft Company!
