Description

ANDTheatre Company (Artistic New Directions) is dedicated to developing new works for performance -- plays, solo shows, acts and whatever else talented people might do to engage an audience. AND offers artists of all levels the opportunity to acquire new skills as well as develop, workshop and produce projects.

As a large number of our members have experience improvising, there is a special interest in works and formats derived from the pioneering explorations by Viola Spolin, Paul Sills and Del Close. Written projects exclusive of improvisation are also encouraged and welcome.

AND supports performing artists and their projects from inspiration through perspiration to production by providing rehearsal and performance space, offering educational opportunities with world-class teachers and mentors at subsidized prices, and helping actors, writers, directors and designers find and collaborate with each other.

Mission

  • To develop and present new theatrical works in fully staged productions that ignite the theatergoer’s mind, heart and imagination; productions that strike out in artistic new directions.
  • To build and sustain a community of theatre artists and their collaborators;
  • To provide that community with artistic and technical resources from inspiration to production;
  • To explore and expand the possibilities of improvisation as a performing skill and as a means of creating scripted works.

    Firstly, the class was 90 minutes rather than 60 (and even ran over) so even better value than it looks. Secondly, I have been to improv classes before but learnt a lot from this one. It was a drop-in class for people of all abilities (from first timers to people who have been doing it for years) but everyone took away something, and the teacher was good and highlighting ways to improve without sounding at all negative. And the standard was pretty decent.

    Really fun class and the instructor was engaging and welcoming! They are very strict about not letting people who arrive a bit late participate, which was disappointing since I came with a friend. I understand their policy but with such a small group, it would have been easy to be a bit more flexible. Because we weren't able to fully participate, we ended up leaving early.
